Occurs in freshwater, brackish and marine conditions. Found intertidally in wave-exposed to very sheltered habitats, in brackish pools, lagoons and mudflats, and in eutrophic freshwater streams and lakes with pH >7
Green algae with erect or prostrate filaments, sparsely to profusely branched. Attached species have basal cells adherent by a discoid holdfast of descending rhizoids
