Distinguishing characteristics (within family/genus):

This species is distinguished from most species by its stipes with red-brown bases, covered with red-brown hairs. It is distinguished from H. amaurorachis by its larger fronds (H. amaurorachis has fronds to 75 cm long, fronds of H. rugosula are to 150 cm long) ¹
